Living in Survival Mode vs. Learning to Live

If your someone who is a deep thinker or feeler you know all to well how quickly that can change from deep to way overthinking. That’s me! My parents should have made my middle name ‘overthinks’ because “Jessica overthinks” is a common phrase I hear. It started from a good place in my heart of course.

I love my people; and I never ever want to hurt anyone because I know what it feels like to be hurt by someone you love. It sucks and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone; not even the shittiest person on the planet.

When it comes time to make a decision that affects other people, i freeze, I panic and the big bad scary ‘What if’s” start rolling in.

Two weeks ago I quit a job that I had loved…okay it wasn’t the job that I loved. It was the relationships I had built that meant so much to me. Taking this break has made me realize I have been in constant freeze, flight or fight since I was a very little girl. It also taught me that I actually don’t need those ‘tool’s now’ because I have already survived. I’m no longer in survival mode.

I survied an abusive relationship with my dad.

I survived single motherhood

I survived long days and nights

I survived being alone

I survived so much…I already did the surviving part.

Now I get to Live!

So my question for you is; What have you Survived? I want you to ask yourself “Am I still Surviving? Is it time for me to Live?”

I used to think life was just one thing, you grow up, go to school or work, get married, have kids and then wash and repeat. I don’t know about you but that may have been told to me as a child but as an adult I am realizing we have so much more control over our dreams than ever before.

I often hear about Gen Z young adults and how they job hop. If you ask a boomer or Gen X they might say those kids are just lazy they don’t want to build themselves from the bottom. I’ve got to say though… I think it’s kind of brave. Now I am not saying you should go quit your job without a plan… I’m saying maybe its okay to not stay in something that doesn’t serve you any longer. Doesn’t make you happy.

We are human; so something that makes us happy for five years can change. We can want different things.

For me my fear of hurting my boss and my company weighed on me so heavily. I was happy for so long; i fell in love with my work and my clients and I loved talking to them but mostly I loved that something I was doing was directly helping them. My heart has been telling me for so long that I am here on this earth for something bigger. I’m still figuring out what exactly that is but I do know that helping people is at the core.

Daily Challenge:

-3 things you love (not people)

-3 things that make you… YOU

-3 things you want to work on doing better.

These don’t need to be overly serious just keep it simple. When you care a lot about others it is easy to forget you need care & help too.
